I read this book to my class.
I know last year when I posted about this book, some people said they had a hard time finding it.  So, I have included an additional letter without the information about this book for you.
What do you do to teach your students about September 11th?

  1. This is fantastic! I read it to my class every year. Each year, I find students have a harder time understanding. I've started showing them appropriate footage from the news from that day to help them really understand. It is always incredible the conversations that come out of reading this book!

  2. Thank you for sharing your ideas. I knew I wanted to talk about 9/11 but was uncertain how to approach this sensitive issue. I love your idea. You are always very creative.

  3. Thank you for sharing the letter you send to parents. I think this is a good way to remember the date without getting into too much detail with our young children.

  5. Thank you for sharing. My students are 3rd graders. Yesterday (Sept 11) we read "The Man Who Walked Between 2 Towers" and "Fireboat". They are both true stories. The first takes place in the past, but mentions that the towers are no longer there. Fireboat gives an account of heroes who used a fireboat to fight the fires that day. While it does illustrate the tires on fire, it does it in a somewhat abstract way. It focuses on the heroes of the day rather than the tragedy. Today we read September the 12th and discussed the ways our country is safer and write letters to thank the first responders in our community.
